Good Dog?

lsien Feb 12, 2005 11:55 PM

We did lots of homework on our ckcs to ensure we got a great puppy , because the last dog(coccker spaniel) was very mean and aggresive. our new puppy boomer is only 8 weeks old but in the last couple days has already began to growl and nip if he doesn't get his way. well I know some of this is power struggle
and just being a puppy, but we are so scared we will get a mean dog. does anyone have the best way to deal with this so we wont have to worry that our 4 year old will have a mean dog? he seems to have a very loving nature most of the time but so scared we might get a kujo dog again we want to do every thing we can to make him lovable!

Isien, it might be helpful if you can post a couple of instances of where the aggression is coming from? Example...is it at feeding time or play time..etc? They are usually a well behaved dog, are very intelligent and easy to train with gentle positive reinforcement.

I just picked him up and was holding him and he was wanting down so he growled and nipped at me. he is only 8 weeks old he doesnt scare me yet but it seemes if you dont do what he wants then he pitches a fit and I think he is young enough we can get it under control before it gets out of hand but I do not need another dog with a temper. is this normal for them to growl and nip at you if he doesnt get his way at this age?

Sometimes the problem is the training methods making the dog feel defensive. The only way to find out if it's a temperament problem or a training problem is to have him evaluated by an expert in person. Your vet can help you find someone in your area qualified to do this.
