Hello I am new to the message board, and I hope I can find someone to get me a little advice.
I have a 4 month old female chow chow, she is a wondeful puppy. I am considering buying another puppy, I already have one I really would like to get it's also a female but from a different breeder. my question is, will two chows get along together ok or is it best to just have one?

Our reason for getting another puppy is Roxy (our 4month old) seems lonely we walk her twice a day and play with her all the time, I spend all of my day with her. we have the means to care for another dog well. but I am just concerned about (pack problems) I am thinking getting another puppy now would be the best time before Roxy gets any older, but I want to be sure.. Thank you

Your a great pet owner for researching before buying. 4 months old would be a good time to get another dog, however, they might bond to each other more so than to you? Talk to other breeders, they don't necessarily need to be in you area. Before we added another dog to our family, I called several breeders from different states to get an unbiased opinion. Check temperments also. Like 2 alpha females would tend to not get along. Spaying would be another topic you may want to look into. Good luck

Hopefully Debra will answer on this one, but I think she'll agree with me that if you want two Chows, they need to be opposite sex rather than two females. I really think you would get terrible fighting with two females.

thank you so much for the advice
YES I will spay both of course, I am not
or would I ever want to breed, I truly believe
that to be a breeder you must be able to better
the breed. I am just looking for a pet. I am
now considering a male, but I have never owned
a male before of any breed, I don't know why I
just have always went with females. again thank
you all for the advice!! I have a lot more research
to do
thanks

Debra is a GREAT source of information!!! We got on the forum looking for advise on aggression issues with resources (mainly food). We had been searching the internet for a month and kept getting conflicting views and had NO idea which way to go! Debra gave great advise and links that relate to chows! Although we still have problems on occassion it is getting so much better!!!!!! With time and consistancy I know we are going to make it through this. Just today for lunch Bruno (our 4 month old male chow) started to growl at me when I brought my hand with his food down for him to eat from. Using the techniques we have learned it quickly changed to a whine, I gave the command down, he laid down, and that was the end of it. Before he would have gone off growling and snapping at my hand. We are not perfect in this house but thanks to the help we got from this forum we are getting much better!

Well, As a Chow owner for 6 yrs, my advice is to get a male, however, wait until your current chow is at least 1 yr old. That way training has been established and she knows the rules.

If you get another chow it NEEDS to be a male, because a Bitch fight is not pretty. I have 3 dogs 1 chow, 1 chow mix and a schipperke.

We introduced Jamie (mix) to Ben (chow) when he was 18 months old and that was the PERFECT time to get a second dog.

The dog's should be introduced on neutral territory and se how it goes. But I do not recommend getting another puppy until this one learns pack order from you. besides its easier to train 1 dog at a time and a chow is a dog that will always and forever have to have training. An untrained dog is a BAD owner.

Please focus on your little one, then when she has graduated from training and she is 1 yr old, introduce a male...I cannot reitterate opposite sex more then I have.

Hi Angela,
Thank you so much for the advice
we plan on getting a male now, I just
have one problem I already paid the breeder
she was willing to let me take my pick of the
males instead of the female. So it does look
like we will be getting a puppy in the next 2
months, I have Roxy in training and she is doing
very well, I do feel I can handle 2 chows as I don't
work outside of the home, I am here just about 24/7
and I take Roxy with me where ever I go, and I will
take our new little guy too.. But again I am greatful
for all the advice, and thank you very much.. any advice
any one can give me couldn't hurt ) thank you all for
being so nice!
Hugs,

Okay we now have a multiple level problem. NO responsible breeder is breeding dogs to let a pet home pick a male... which means, without any question or doubt, you are dealing with a backyard breeder at best, a puppymiller at worse.

Lets put it to the test. Call the breeder and explain that you have decided you are NOT ready for a 2nd dog and would like a refund. Any responsible person will do so. If they don't, tell them you will report them to AKC as 2 mos is plenty of time to request a refund from a RESPONSIBLE breeder. Period.

Then, email me and let me help you look at the pedigree of the dog you have and the people you are dealing with so I can better explain to you what a responsible breeder IS and why this one isn't. And, btw, I am not a chow breeder. I only do rescue with them. So I have nothing to sell except my strong belief that when you put money into the hands of irresponsible breeders, you contribute to the problem.

When your pup is old enough, we will help you find either a GREAT rescue pup or a great breeder. Honest. I'll be here for you.

Absolutely NO on another female, and not now for any pet. While some hound breeds need 2 at once, chows are not such dogs. Responsible breeders and rescues do not recommend getting a 2nd pup until the older one is at least 12 to 18 mos old. The goal is for the dog to be trained and to BOND with you. Then add in another one.
