INJURED ALBINO CLAWED FROG

brita May 27, 2003 06:45 PM

HI, I HAVE A 4 YEAR OLD ALBINO THAT I NOTICED HER FRONT LEG IS STRANGE. KINDA WEAK OR SOMETHING THAT SHE STRUGGLED TO SWIM. I PUT HER IN A SMALL TANK WITH JUST ENOUGH WATER TO COVERED HER. IT HAPPENED TO MY BROWN CLAWED FROG LAST JAN. 2002, HAD THAT PROBLEM FOR 6 MONTHS OR SO, THREE TIMES TO HEALED UNTIL GOT WORSE AND NO LONGER IN DEEPER WATER. PUT IN SMALL TANK ALSO, FOR A MONTH TIL SHE DIED. HAD HER FOR 3 1/2 YEARS. I'VE HEARD THAT AFRICAN CLAWED FROGS LIFE SPAN UP TO 15 YEARS. IS IT TRUE? ANYTHING I CAN DO TO HELP MY ALBINO'S FRONT LEG? I FEEL MAYBE WITHIN A WEEK TO A MONTH WILL BE HER TIME. I HAVE ANOTHER ALBINO IN ANOTHER TANK, BOUGHT HER LAST JANUARY 2003 AFTER THE OTHER ONE DIED. I ENJOY WATCHING THEM GROW. HOPE SOMEONE CAN ANSWER ME. I THINK THERE IS NOTHING I CAN DO TO HEAL IT, RIGHT?

15 is long but they can live even longer, over 20 or 25. Something sounds wrong. What do you feed? I would get it to a vet ASAP. arav.org has a list of herp vets.

I FEED HER FEEDER FISH FOR 4 YEARS. SHE LOVES FISH THAN THE CRICKETS. THAT'S GOOD AND I CAN'T TOLERATE SEEING THE CRICKETS DROWN. YUCK. I'VE RECENTLY BEEN TRYING TO GIVE HER BIG LIVE MOTHS, BUT SHE ALWAYS FAILED TO CATCH IT AND NEVER TRY IT AGAIN. THE SMALL ALBINO CAN EASILY CATCH IT. LOL

A VET? NO VETS WILL TAKE THAT KIND OF PETS AROUND HERE OTHER THAN MY OLD HOMETOWN DID AND THAT'S 3 HOURS DRIVE. BUT I DON'T WANT A VET TO THINK OF THE MONEY MORE THAN THE PETS. SO SHE CAN BE BETTER OFF IN GOD'S HANDS WHEN HER TIME IS UP. I LOVE AQUATIC FROGS SO MUCH.

Feeding fish alone is a bad idea...it is just a bad diet over all. And I do not get what you are saying...are you saying that you would rather see the frog suffer and die than try to get it some help due to personal issues? If a vet can treat it, he can treat it. If you do not want to deal with vets then do not get pets. It is that easy. If you can not afford a vet or just do not want to see one for your own reasons, then in theory, you can not afford a frog. If your other frog showed the same symptoms and then this one does as well it is obviously something you are doing. Therfore, the frog is "going into god's hands" prematurely. I have had my clawed frog for years and it has never had one problem. But please, do not say you love frogs and that you will fail to provide the proper treatment for them in the same breath...it sounds bad. If your animal is sick and is exactly like another one your kept before, it is your reponsibility to get it treatment. I think you need to read up some more on them too...That is the end of my preaching...

Some-what dissapointed

HI AGAIN. NO SIR, IT IS NOT ABOUT AFFORDING. LIKE I SAID THERE IS NO VETS THAT WILL TAKE REPTILES, EXIOTICS, AQUATICS AROUND HERE. I WISH THEY DO. I DID CALLED THE PET STORE WHERE THEY DO SELL THEM, AND THEY DON'T KNOW NOTHING ABOUT IT. DON'T HAVE THE TREATMENT STUFF.
HOW ABOUT YOU? ANY MEDS FROM THE PET STORE THAT I CAN USE LIKE VITAMINS AND ETC? I TRIED THE ONLINE VET THAT YOU SENT ME. IT DIDN'T WORK. I FEEL I'VE FEED THE FROGS FINE. I HAVE BOOKS ABOUT THEM. ONE BOOK FROM A VET THRU COLLEGE SAYS NO MEALWORMS AND WAX WORMS FOR THEM AND HARD TO DIGEST, TAKES A WHILE TO DO SO. BUT YES BLOODWORMS AND EARTHWORMS. THE 4 YR OLD DOES NOT LIKE DRIED OR FREEZE BLOODWORMS. SHE LIKES ANYTHING LIVE THAT'S ALL. I KNOW SHE INJURED HER FRONT LEG FROM BEING STARLED AND WHAM INTO THE VASE SOMEHOW BY ACCIDENT. THE OTHER BROWN ONE I HAD WAS FROM MY BROTHER THAT DIDN'T HANDLED IT RIGHT WHEN WE MOVED HERE. HE DIDN'T FOLLOWED WHAT I TOLD HIM, SO IT HURT ITS ONE FRONT AND BACK LEG.

There is still something wrong...Fish are VERY high in fat and WAY too high in calcium. A diet of all fish is enough to kill any frog eventually. There are other options, brine shrimp, worms, ect. Even pellets. Variety is best. And I can not give you any idea of what to get because you need a vet or someone you can actually see to diagnose the problem. Andy

Sounds like he just sort of in human terms, sprained his leg or something like that. I agree with you about the vet, this is nature keep feeding it worms and things, something slow so the frog doesn't hurt its leg more, trying to catch it. I think if you just take it slow, and make sure the nutrition is right, your frog should be fine. It may even not get enough vitamins and the bones aren't able to stay strong, at the pet store they should have some sort of dust for frogs that you can dust onto the bugs before feeding. Also, if you get the freeze-dried worms it should help because it will be easier to catch. Take chopsticks or something and fake movement, your frog should go for it. One other thing, there are dishes that shake that are for lizards and amphibians, so when you put the dead bug in, the bugs will shake and the frog tinks they are alive and will go for it, I've never tried the dish before, but it sounds promising. Good Luck!

I'VE JUST GOTTEN INFORMED FROM SOMEONE THAT I EMAILED MY LONG DISTANCE VET. SHE QUESTIONED ME WHAT I NEEDED TO ANSWERED AND GAVE ME THE NAME OF TREATMENTS FOR THE FROG AND SAID HAVE SEEN ONE LIKE MINE. SO I'M GOING TO THE PET STORE TOMORROW MY DAY OFF AND WILL GET SOME OF THE MEDICINES FOR THE FROG. WAS EASY TO WORK WITH. OK I WON'T NEED TO COME BACK HERE. THANKS.

brita May 29, 2003 01:28 AM

THE FROG IS DOING MUCH BETTER AND THE MEDICINE DID HELPED. SO GLAD THAT MY EX-LONG DISTANCE VET ANSWERED ME SWIFTLY. IT USUALLY TAKES FOR HER TO GET BACK TO ME IN DAYS TO A WEEK OR SO. SHE KNEW WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS. THE MEDICINE DID HELPED THE FROG SHEDS THE SKIN EASILY. THE VET TOLD ME THE FROG CAN HAVE THE FEEDERS. I TOLD HER THAT MY FROG EATS AT LEAST A DOZEN FEEDERS A WEEK OR SO. I BOUGHT THE FEEDERS A WEEK AND A HALF AGO. STILL GOT ABOUT 6 FEEDERS LEFT. SHE WILL SELDOM EAT FREEZE DRIED BLOOD WORMS, BUT PREFER ANYTHING LIVE ONLY. THE FROG IS FINE EATING FEEDERS FOR 4 YEARS AS THE VET TOLD ME THAT I CAN GIVE MY FROG TWO NIGHT CRAWLERS AS A TREAT LIKE I DID BEFORE. AND THE FROG WILL EAT LIVE GHOST SHRIMPS. I TOLD THE VET THAT MY OTHER ALBINO IN A DIFFERENT TANK LIKES ANYTHING FREEZE DRIED TO FROZEN AND LIVE BRINE SHRIMPS, WATER FLEAS, BLOODWORMS, ... ETC. IN A FEW DAYS TO A WEEK I WILL BE PUTTING THE FROG BACK IN ITS 55 GALLON TANK.

NOW I'M GOING TO GET READY TO PACK FOR TMW'S VACATION FOR A WEEK OR TWO. MY DEAR HUSBAND WILL TAKE CARE OF EVERYTHING FOR ALL THE PETS. CIAO, STAMMI BENE.

The frog could have a lack of calcium, thats what that sounds like to me.Yeah what do you feed it?If he doesnt seem to be able to swim then take him to a vet.
