When will my GSD mix be able to hold it all night ?

Jessie226 Mar 08, 2005 10:38 AM

Cookie is almost 5 months old, and still wakes up to go out in the middle of the night. I know this is when she should be able to hold it for longer, but it seems to be going the other way. For a little while, she WAS holding it all night until about 5-6 am. Now she is back to waking up around 3, and I don't understand why. We started keeping her in the crate in the living room rather than the bedroom because she is outgrowing the small crate and we don't have room for a big one in the bedroom, and this is the age she should be starting to be more independant anyways. But she started waking up around 3 am, before we switched her to the living room.
Should we just ignore her since we know she was going longer before? I would hate to let her scream and cry if she actually does have to go. And when we take her out, she DOES go, so we know she is not just fibbing.
We don't mind getting up with her, but don't want it to turn into a habit. If she really has to go then thats fine, but she was holding it for a couple hours longer before, so we don't know if she REALLY has to go.
Any info would be appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Is it possible she has a uti infection? If she was holding it I don't see why she shouldn't be able to now. Or she might just know you'll get up with her. I don't remeber getting up after the first few weeks with my dogs.

I don't think it could be a UTI since she is still fine when we leave her in the crate during the day, but that isn't for longer than 4 hours at a time. She doesn't seem uncomfortable in any way though. We've had her for almost two months and when we first got her, she got up a couple of times, and then she was getting better, every night she would go a little longer until we were at 5:30 am. Then all of a sudden she started getting up earlier again. It could be that she knows we will go to her, but I don't want to leave her if she really does have to go. I don't know what to do. I feel bad for my downstairs neighbors if I let her cry all night, they're very understanding but I don't want to keep them up all night. But I am afraid that if it is a habit, there is no other way to break it except ignore her.
I just don't want to leave her if she really has to go, but I don't want to support her bad habbit either.
We have a vet appointment next week, so if it isn't getting better by then, I will ask the vet what he thinks.

I think at 5 months she should be able to hold it easily. You may have to ignore her for a night...that's if your neighbors are that understanding and you don't mind cleaning up a potential mess. It's not like she can't go just because she's in a kennel but if she does use it in the kennel i think she may have some kind of problem.

She has never gone potty in her crate, and I would feel horrible if she did because I know she knows not to. She did better last night. She slept till about 5 again, so we'll see how it goes tonight.
Thanks!
