First Time Pit Bull Owner...?

miss_k Mar 11, 2005 06:23 PM

Hi everyone!

I posted a message over in the 'Which Breed Do I Want?' section with a question regarding Pits vs. Staffs. Alot of people gave me advice on owning a Pit, and some people advised not to get one if I've never owned one before. But how do people get around to owning them, if they are advised not to get one?

I've done some online research, I've talked to some people who own Pits or Pit mixes, and actually found a girl who works at a local animal hospital who owns both a Pit and Staff, and has agreed to help me out with my own Pit, should I decide to get one. I've looked into doggy day care for socialization, puppy kindergartern classes to start training, and I have obtained info on agility and weight pulling training in my area, so that if I get a Pit, I have outlets for her (hopefully a *her*) to exercise her energy, socialize, and learn things.

I can't think of too much else I can do.

Now my problem is..where do I find a Pit Bull puppy in the Milwaukee area? I've looked at some shelters, and I have not had much lucky finding a young female Pit pup. I don't know of any breeders around here, although I did go check out some pups in the paper (I know the paper is a bad resource, but I just went to check them out, I did not buy!), and I HATED the conditions they were in. The woman selling them even told me that I couldn't touch them until they were paid for. I said Bulls***! She also wants $500 for the puppies b/c they are blue nose and oh so rare! Are they really? The folks I've talked to says a blue nose is no more different than a red nose. She was also selling them at 5 weeks old, and that made me very uncomfortable.

Do any of you have any info on breeders in the Midwest? I'm willing to do a road trip to pick up my puppy if neccesary, or I will consider a humane method of shipping.

Thanks for any help or advice you can give me!

I don't know of any breeders. But it sure sounds like your ready and have done your research. Make sure you visit the breeder. Shipping of a pit bull doesn't sound like a good idea. You want to be able to meet both parents to make sure they have a good temperment.

I would consider shipping as a **last** resort. And to be honest, there's only one person I'd do that with, and it's my boyfriend's sister, but she lives in Louisiana otherwise I'd buy from her! I trust her. More than I can say for the person I met the other night who was selling pit puppies.

Well if you hear of anything in this area, please don't hesitate to post! I have a feeling I'll be looking for a little while.

5 weeks old! Definitely don't buy any puppy less than 8 weeks, for a pit even 10 weeks old would be preferable as it will give her mom a little more time to teach her the appropriate manners (like bite inhibition)..

It's too bad you couldn't somehow manage to get a puppy from Ontario.. I'm in Ontario and the shelters are absolutely full of very young pits that will be put down in a couple of weeks because of the new pit bull ban here..

Have you tried petfinder.com?

There are also tons of young male puppies.. Can I ask why you don't want to adopt a male? If he's neutered early and well trained and socialized he'll be just as well behaved and friendly as any female..

My personal preference is for a girl. I dunno..maybe I'm some sort of animal feminist. LOL. I have no interest in breeding, I just prefer to own female animals. I have owned male dogs before, for what it's worth.
