Germans as pets

Triad Mar 16, 2005 12:06 PM

I've been thinking, since the dog we currently have is pretty old (about 12) and since I'll be moving away for 2 more years of college within a year, about getting a big dog as a pet since the one we have is small.

How are german sheperds? I've been thinking about getting one since I'm going in Criminal Justice (being a cop, probably narcotics) about getting one since I might be able to have him/her as my K-9 partner.

If you become a K9 handler, the department will provide the dog and the training. Your own dog could feel very neglected and you might find it difficult to work with both dogs as they would need. What you might consider doing for now is raising a dog for an assistance dog organization. That would give you a lot of structured dog training and management experience and a good reference for getting into the K9 program later. I hear there's a lot of competition for it.
