Getting a new Chi soon..

cee4 Mar 20, 2005 05:01 PM

I am soo excited, Ive been looking around for local breeders, not to easy to find here in Kansas. Anyway I had a longhaired Chi a few years ago and it died. It got hold of the neighbors rat poison box and chewed on it.He was just sick one day and I was going to take him to the vet the next day if he was still sick but he died before I could get him there..I didnt at the time know it was rat poison I thought he had eaten bad food.I found the box in our yard all chewed on.
Anyway we have since fenced our yard and have a kitty door that the little chihuahua can easily use..My biggest concern is potty training. My last chi wasnt very well trained at all. He always pooped and peed on my throw rugs. I am hoping with the cat door it will be much easier.

Hi,
Welcome to the boards. Sorry to hear about your first Chi and I wish you well in finding a new little one. The fenced in area should make it a little easier for you in the potty training department but you'll still have to check and see if business was taken care of. The cat door may be a help also once the pup is trained. It's my understanding that the smaller dogs are a little more difficult to house train...at least my Shih Tzu was. Hope you'll be sharing pictures of the new pup with the good folks here on the board.

I thought that ID looked very familiar and yes, I do remember you and Cosmo from the Shih Tzu Board. Happy to hear that Cosmo is doing so well with your mom. Come visit us when you get your new pup.

Consistency is the key.

If you aren't consistent with training him/her, they will always have accidents. I have a 5 month old Chi male and he still needs close watch b/c he just relies on me to take him every few hours, he hasn't figured out how to let me know yet. Since the first day I have had him, we've attempted to socialize him really well too, every dog and person we met got to hold/play with him. Every person I meet tells me how calm he is, and friendly. Anyhow - that's bout all the advice I have hehe, still a new Chi mommy myself, but you learn alot in just a few months

i think this was just meant to be..When I first got my other Chi it was from a lady who had just the one litter. It was not papered but she gave me a second puppy free. Anyway I had just had a baby and realized two pups were more than I could handle so I gave my chi's sister to a neighbor I had before I moved. They are an old retired couple and they now have 5 chihuahuas. So last night I stopped by to see if she knew of anyone with pups and one of hers had just had a litter two days ago.Four perfect little puppies. Two white, one chocolate and one brindle.Im going today to pick out the one I want and take pics..Im probably going to take the brindle because it looks alot like Tipsy did.It also looks like it might be a long hair which is also what Tipsy was.
Im going to need alot of help, this pup will be much younger when I get her then Tipsy who was already three months old when I got her.
