Wolf mix or Wolf hybrid?

sugarfox03 Mar 23, 2005 07:25 PM

I have been doing research on "wolf dogs" for quite some time. They are magnificent animals. I do not wish to own one, I know I dont have the appropriate home for one. I just highly respect them, and all dogs, so I do whats best Anywho...I have been debating on whether wolf dogs are mixes, or hybrids. A hybrid, as defined in all my biology classes, is the offspring of two different species. They are both in the "canis" genus, the wolf being "Canis lupis" and the dog being "Canis familiaris" is that close enough to denote them the same species? Are they really "hybrids" or just mixes? Thanks so much!

I believe they are mixes.
But I am not an expert. I also love them but don't have the right situation to ever own one.

I believe they are mixes as well. A hybrid would require a much bigger genetic difference.

Wolves used to be considered a different species than dogs. Recently the consensus among biologists has shifted and they are now officially considered as the same species.
