Weave poles

Bichon114 Mar 25, 2005 10:14 AM

I have a 5 year old Papillon mix. I have been training her in agility, but the wave poles I need help with. Sometimes she will love it and start to "jump" through them. But other times she will refuse to and act like its tourture. She is not that food or toy motivated either. How can I get her motivation up so she can speepd through the poles?

I bet your dog is cute. Did you get her as a pup, adopt her? I love the mixes, have 5 small mixed hound type. We have fun in agility, not formal. I don't have an answer to your question, but just wanted to wish you the best.

Do you have a set of weave poles at home or do you only work them in class?

I find if I only work them in class and not at home, I hit the waeves too hard and do too many repetitions in a row and my dog's motivation to do them goes down. When I have them set up at home, I can do them 4 or 5 times a day, very quickly, just once through before letting them out to use the bathroom or right before going on a walk.

I got Dixie as a present from my grandma. She was from the pound somewhere in Tennessee, where my aunt used to live and my grandma used to visit her.

I have my own set of weave poles. I don't go to agility class, but I would like to someday. Right now I am too busy with other activites. I show in conformation, I have Bichons, and when I retire my bitch I would like to do agility competition. She loves it too. With Dixie, I would like to do competitions because she is getting older and I like to keep my dogs active and and in shape. We are working on some agility in 4H class. And we did last practice. It was the best I have ever seen Dixie do and she was very motivated. But they didn't have the weave poles set up because most of the dogs dont know how to do them. I dobt Dixie would have done them right anyway. Right now the weave poles is out only weakness.

Great pic!!!!

The weaves are one of the hardest things to teach a dog. If your dog is getting through them precisely and not missing a pole, speed comes later. You may want to put some guide wires on and that way your dog can succeed with them and gain confidence and speed that way. When they have to do it and think on their own, they get better at it overall.
