aggression triggered by new smells

DonnaC Mar 29, 2005 07:56 AM

Unusual scents can trigger aggression in my alpha female. Two examples: After my male had surgery on his foot she insisted on licking wound. When he tried to stop her she snapped at him. Once the smell from the meds was gone, she was no longer aggressive. Also, any trace of scent from anal sacs makes her hyper and can trigger same aggressive response. Can anything help this situation?

You could try rewarding her with treats for reacting calmly to these smells. Start at a distance from the smell, and do not give her a reward if she has growled first. You need to catch her being calm before any aggression, to avoid rewarding aggression.
