New to Chow Chow Breed

amalia8996 Apr 03, 2005 04:51 PM

I got a dog recently that is part chow and part german shepherd. I was just curious about the chow chow part because I have never had a chow chow before. I am hoping that someone can tell me about personality and training of a chow chow. I hope to learn more about this breed so that I can better understand my dog's behavior and personality. Thanks, Amalia8996

Both breeds need a very, very strong hand in training. If not very thoroughly obedience trained many chows and also many german shepherds will tend toward dominance aggression. The first thing I would do is book him in obedience classes and go every single week for at least 8 months..

Congrats on your new dog.

Chows are, well chowy. THey can be very single minded.

They have a tendency to give you a cold "butt" when mad.

They generally do not like to play fetch (you threw it? So... go get it).

They are loyal and loving and kind. They don't like physical reprimands and its a really poor idea to punish that way.

They are wonderful, but not for everyone.
