Would Agility Training Be Enough to Satisfy a BC? (NO HERDING)

Fandogg Apr 14, 2005 03:13 PM

If I were to basically just do agility with my BC's (dont own anyyet but intend to get a few) I dont feel like having sheep at my house so could I satisfy the dogs needs by sticking strictly to agility and maybe some obedience?

Some people are obsessive enough about agility and obedience sports to keep a BC busy. Keeping two busy is a huge job. Keeping three busy is beyond huge. And just the practice time for the sports, even if it's an hour a day for seven days a week individually for each dog (i.e. you spend two hours for two dogs), they would still need more time from you and more stuff to do. They were bred to work full-time. Maybe you could get more familiar with them by volunteering as a foster home for a BC rescue.

You just need to keep doing something with a BC. Tennis balls are a must! Try different sizes balls. They also like running, obedience and anything interactive. The key to a happy BC is activity so be sure you are an active person BEFORE you get one. They take to agility so easily you will be amazed!!They also enjoy Flyball. Find a local dog training club and take some classes-the BC will be the class star!

Hello, just a bit of background, I have been a member of an agility club for 7 years. I started with a Chesapeake Bay Retriever, now retired, and I was given a Border Collie. Both dogs very different. My Chessie was willing to please but slow. My Border Collie very fast and willing to please. I am fortunate to have property that is fenced in and I own some agility equipment. I don't practice and drill my dogs everyday. I make things fun like a game. Tennis balls are my BC's favorite. I do compete and have lots of fun.

Contrary to what most people think, BC's are not some hyper, bouncing off the wall dog that you have to keep entertained all the time. Like all dogs, there are different personalities. Sure, my BC plays hard and is fast, but also loves to cuddle by me and stay quiet
