is my vet right about my dobe's ears?

rianandamber Apr 15, 2005 11:10 AM

My dobe is 4 1/2 months old. His ears were cropped at eight weeks. The breeder handled that. He has a medium long crop. Everything I've read states that I need to keep them wrapped at least 3 months. But my vet doesn't think so. So he took the tape off of gunny, that's my dobe. The tape has been off for two days and almost immediately Gunny's ears started turning in. Can anyone offer any advice on this subject? I don't want his ears to be ruined.

No your vet is not right - most vets are just not that knowledgeable about ear cropping.

Keep posting those ears!! It is usually necessary to keep posting until your puppy has at least finished growing their adult teeth in at about 6 to 7 months. I finished posting my current bitches ears at 7 months. Sometimes it will take longer. Don't stop too soon!!

Good luck to you! I know it is a pain in the patooty continue to post but the end results are sooooo worth it!

Yep,keep posting. We got a little lax with my boys ears towards the end and sometimes they look like they point in. YOu could call your breeder and ask how long she recommends you doing it.

Although I generally would agree with consulting with the breeder on any issue, any good breeder is going to tell their puppy owners to keep posting until they're right, period. So, in this case, there's not much point in calling ...

There is no time frame on posting. You post until you're done posting, I always tell people. If the ears droop, if the ears sag, if the ears point inwards, if they are not correct -- you keep posting. It's that easy.

Hi, just wanted to say thanks to everyone who helped on this issue. Gunny's ears are again being posted and they alreaady seem to be doing better. I also have one more question.

I have the ears posted. Do I need a brace in between the ears? He's already learned to keep them up straight and at this time I don't have a brace. I just want some opinions on this. thanks again.

You probably don't need to use a brace-I rarely use them, even with younger puppies.
