joint supplements

Hello my name is Samantha and this is my first time in the Rottweiler forum. I have Great Danes but my parents have a Rott and I have grown up with them my whole life. I noticed that Hyde (10 yrs old) has had problems getting up as most Rotts will eventually have but lately it has gotten so bad I have to hold her back end up when coming home from the neighbors house. She can make it there but not home; it's just too much. I have my danes on supplements and I wanted to know what the owners of Rottweilers use for their joints to ease the pain or swelling. I don't think it is too late because everything else is fine with her but her bones are just getting old and I would hate to see her go because her hips are going. If anyone can help me it would be greatly appreciated.

The AKC Gazette has a good article on it this month. You'll need your veterinarian's help. She may need some restriction of activity at times. She may need a non steroidal anti-inflammatory drug such at Etogesic, Rimadyl or Duramaxx. They all have risks, but there is a time it's worth it for the extra good time the dog can get from it. Adequan injections can be very helpful, and so can Cosequin pills. I have a dog with osteoarthritis in the hips who is doing really great with his doctor's help.

My dad's dog had this problem as well, she's almost 10.. Her vet had her on Metacam for over a year and she was doing very well but if she didn't get her metacam for a day she wouldn't be able to move again and would cry in pain..

Canidae Platinum is a dry dog food that is a little more expensive than other food but it might help your dog a lot. It's full of all those supplements that help their hips and is made of human grade ingredients. She'll eat less of it as well than almost any other food, so it's not too much more expensive if you take that into account.

My dad's dog has been eating Canidae for about 2 months now. After 3 weeks or so her vet took her off the Metacam and she hasn't had a single problem with her hips since, and my parents are saving all kinds of money not having to buy the metacam..

Just a thought.. There's much less risk of forgetting to give meds for a day that way too.. There's nothing worse than waking up to find the dog in such pain, and realizing that you forgot her meds the day before...

I have never heard of this food where do you get it? My danes are on Eagle Pak and I have to go to curtain stores to get it. Maybe you can give me a website or something it would be very helpful and I would like to try the food first and see if that would help. Thank you for all the help.

Do get the dog to the vet. If she can't walk home from a walk, she needs more help and more quickly than from a change in dog food.

Glad to hear it. My dog is doing great on vitamins including C and E and multi that I give all my dogs, plus Cosequin he started on about a month after his diagnosis. The first thing we did was get him to the vet fast, and he was put on Etogesic for two weeks to get it to flare down. We gave it two weeks to see how stable he was at that point, and then started on Cosequin. The initial dose is higher, and then the vet lowers it and the dog stays on it. It's a nutritional supplement rather than a drug. He will get Etogesic as needed, but stay off it when he does not need it. He gets bloodwork frequently to make sure he's still okay to take the medication.

He was not as bad as the dog you're describing, because he could walk fine. It was jumping and rearing and standing on hind legs that he suddenly couldn't do. It is quite possible Adequan injections will be prescribed for their dog, and those have a very good record, too.

Last time I looked, even though that had a LITTLE it wasn't approaching the therapeutic doses.

Samantha one thing that has worked fantastically for me is Bromelain. its made from pineapple. When my rottie injured her neck and glucosamine, chondrit, chiropracter, and even rimadyl didn't help, someone suggested vit c and bromelain. They act as natural anti-inflamatory and pain meds. Natural, not expensive and they work.
