A friend needs to find a Kennel/trainer

craig1976 Apr 26, 2005 04:44 PM

I have a friend who is looking for a protection dog. He needs a dog to watch his house and family. He needs a mature Dog that is trained already.

He's still not sure exactly what kind of dog he is looking for but since he lives in Alaska I'm thinking a long haire dbreed would be best.

I'm just trying to give him ideas and point him in the right direction. The final descission will be all his.

Thanks for your time.

What he needs to be looking for is the right trainer. The trainer would be the one to match him with the dog. It's also essential that he understand he will have to become trained to be able to control the dog. A dog cannot function like the Secret Service, making and carrying out a protection plan. A dog requires a skilled handler.

If I were in this situation, I think I'd contact a top security company for their recommendations. I mean a really top one, that guards people who can afford the best, and not just using dogs. And the Secret Service, if he can get anyone there to talk to him about it. And his nearest really GOOD police and/or military dog training unit. Not just any handler, but the head training officer.

Those are good ideas and if he didn't live inside the artic circle they might be feasable, but they aren't. He is the local authority figure so that's out the window too.

I know there are Kennels/Trainers out there that specialize in this kind of thing. I was just wondering if anybody on the board had experiance with any of them. I figured that might narrow down the selection proccess a little. Oh well.

Maybe contact the national (?) that is USA, organizations for German Shepherd & the 'Schutzhund' (sp) organizations.

You might get more 'ideas' from a google search on this one.
