travelling with puppy

beast May 01, 2005 03:47 AM

Hi! I just got my 10 week old chi a few days ago and I just found out that in a couple of weeks I have to travel for business for a whole week. Unfortunately I can't get out of it and now I'm worried about what I'm going to do. I'm wondering how safe it is for me to take him along with me and stay in hotels, eat at restuarants, and how to manage all of this. I really don't want to leave him with anybody...there's no one I trust enough to take care of a puppy this small. Can someone please offer some advice? I'm also worried about having him out and about without having all his shots. Thanks in advance for your help!

Can your breeder puppy sit him?

For me I would not take a pup that is not fully vacinated.

When I traveled for work I took my girl LaVie with me, she was about 7 years old then, and she made the best traveling companion.

Unfortunately, my breeder does not live near me...I had to fly to pick him up. I was hoping if I brought a playpen and pee-pads with me and didn't let him touch anything outside of that, or his carrying case, I might not have to worry so much about him not being vaccinated. He will have had 2 sets of shots by the time I take him...what exactly would I have to be careful of without the last set? Thanks.

Other dogs and especially places other dogs have pottied. If you can avoid those situations, in your place, I would take him. It is likely to be invaluable socialization that will stand him in good stead for life. Just make sure the care you give him is all times absolutely tip top.

Thank you Kathy...that makes me feel so much better!! I plan to be with him 24/7 and will not allow him anywhere near other dogs. Are cats a problem? I was planning to visit a friend that has cats, but I won't if it will put my puppy in danger. Does anyone have any advice as to how I should let my pup go to the bathroom when we're on the move, as I don't want him to touch any contaminated ground. Thanks so much!

You might have to use an indoor method for now, such as newspapers, puppy pads or dog litter box (cat litter is unsafe for dogs). As far as the cat, the pup could easily get injured if the cat slashes him, the pup's tummy should not be exposed to the risk of eating cat food, and eating anything from the cat litter box would be harmful to the dog. So I'd be really careful about any contact with the cat or the cat's things. A little supervised, PLEASANT contact with the cat could be a very good thing, though, for the dog's future attitude about cats.

I've had my chi for about 5 years now. He goes EVERYWHERE with me. He's been on a 13 hour car ride, stayed at numerous hotels (Holiday Inn is usually the most accommodating), flown several major airlines, and even goes on bike rides. He just got a companion. A female, about a year and a half old. She goes everywhere as well.

My dogs are voice trained and don't normally use a leash. They both have carrying cases for airline trips that they recognize and enjoy.

I've found that when traveling, the dogs need constant reassurance that he first thing I do when getting to a hotel is to walk the dogs outside. This way, they know where the "potty" area is. Otherwise, they assume that the room is the potty area!

What I am trying to say is, if your chi is trained well, traveling can be a interesting experience for both of you. Most restaurants won't allow your little one, but as long as I am carrying mine, nobody else complains.

Good luck with your traveling. Have fun and take lots of pictures.
