Aggressive 11 week old pup

susanna May 12, 2005 08:41 AM

I have an 11 week old chi pup.He is the cutest thing ever. However sometimes he get so aggressive with his biting and he makes this horrible noise when he is biting,he sounds like a gremlin. It does not seem like he is playing when he does this.Nothing I have done or said stops this aggression.I do not want him to turn into a neurotic dog.Any suggestions???
One more thing,...Is it normal for him to be protective already, because he barks and growls at new people who come around. This dog goes everywhere with me , he has always been around people. He goes with me
everyday to pick up my kids from school, and now when I take him he barks at the kids there. Is this normal?.

Hi Susan,
Eleven week old puppies love to bite and anything handy is fine with them...especially hands. You might want to keep some kind of a chew bone handy and when he starts to bite, stick the chew bone in his mouth. It's great to take him many places. This will help to socialize him. Perhaps his barking at the kids is just an excited bark because he's glad to see them. When I got my Shih Tzu, I took her everywhere that dogs were allowed. It worked out great. She loves people and I continue to take her even now that she's nine years old. I never had a growling problem but perhaps the chi folks can help you out in that department.

Good luck with the little one and perhaps you can join us some Thursday night in Small Dog Chat.
