The squirts

nilsen9491 May 13, 2005 11:32 AM

Ok, seriously, this have got to stop! I've got 2 small dogs, a Chewy chewy (Lucy) and a Shih-Tzu (Bailey). Bailey is a few years older that lucy, who is now about 10 months old...maybe a year. Anywhoo....a year or so ago, Bailey would get the squirts when I came home b/c he was soooo excited. Eventually it stopped. I am aware of small dogs and their bladders. it wasn't a big deal, ok, so I got a little pee on my leg....but Lucy on the other hand, well, here it is:

We live on the second floor of an apartment. It took Lucy several weeks to learn to climb the stairs, but she is absolutely petrified of going down the stairs. She tried once and just tumbled being that each step is more of a leap for her. So we have to carry her down. no biggie. but she just gets so damn excited that we're going outside, when we reach down to get her, she just starts peeing peeing peeing. and, ok, I can cope with that. but another thing she'll do is just roll right into the freshly formed puddle. I think it's kinda funny....until I get dog pee all over me b/c this spastic dog needs to be held tight. Anyway, it's frustrating. Will this go away in time? Is there anything I can give her to tighten up her bladder? I work in a vitamin store, and we actually have something called "No more leaks" that I was thinking about trying....but I just dunno if that'll do the trick....anyone else have this problem?

Hi Mike,
Many small dogs learn to climb stairs more quickly than they learn to go down them. I had that problem with my Shih Tzu. I never had the peeing problem but she was nervous just looking down the stairs when I held her. I then held her so she was looking back over my shoulder and this worked out fine. Perhaps this will work for your little one. Pick her up before you get to the stairs also if that's possible so she doesn't start to get nervous. Katie comes down the stairs fine now but every now and then she will sit at the top and give a little bark for me to come up and carry her down. I just tell her to come down and she does. She still won't go down my uncarpeted basement stairs but we don't have to use those that often so it's not really a problem. As Lucy gets older this fear may leave her but try picking her up before you get near the stairs and hold her over your shoulder and see how that works out. Good luck!

Hi Mike,
My little Chihuahua Ruby Ann is 4 1/2 month old now. I have no stairs in my house for her to climb up and down, but she does run up and down the 3 steps I have going out our back door to are yard. I would think it could be, because your little one has alot more stairs there and that could be why she is not sure about that. From the top of the stairs to a little dog it can look like along drop to them.As for the peeing, well Ruby goes on her pad in the house, Im in the process of training her to go outside now that it is warming up in Michigan here, But when I leave her home and no matter if it is along time or a short amount of time, she gets excited to see me when I come back home and when I used to reach down to pet her she would pee on the floor to. So now when I come in the door and just say hi Ruby and walk away and do something for a minute or two and then she goes to her pee pad and pee's right away. Then I go and love her up and no more pee on the floor. So maybe try that and see if that helps it some.
Warm Regards
Sheryl & Ruby
