Wait to herd... or dont wait to herd, that is the question!... HELP!

I have a beautiful BC puppy about 8 months old. I got her because i love sheepherding, and i really wanted to get into it. But the guy i take lesson with lives in florida, and is not comming up until July! and my dog really wants to work. so we got her runner ducks, and she is bored of them already and wont work them. so she is turning to our horses, and i am afriad she is going to get hurt... what would you suggest i do to work her brain, cause she is bored out of her mind, and until the teacher guy comes up, i dont have any sheep for her. I have heard that you shouldnt obiedience train a sheepherding dog. cause then they will look at you when u talk to them, instead of staring at the sheep. I am all out of ideas, so i am asking for some suggestion... anybody??? thanks a bunch!

I just stumbled onto this thread as I posted a herding picture earlier. It's been a while since you posted. I wonder if you could rent a tennis ball launcher and let her go after those in the meantime. She wouldn't have to look at you for that. Does she herd any inanimate objects? If so, maybe scatter them in the yard and let her herd them. The good news is that it is almost July and her teacher will be here soon. Let us know what you have been doing to keep her mind active.

well so far i ahve given in and have been doing some obedience. heel down come stay- all the basice except sit... i figure we can leave that one out. she already herds her soccer ball, and i have taught her her herding directions on it. so thats kinda cute. we have indian runner ducks, which i think i mentioned in the last post- which she used to herd and is now bored of them and just pounces on them just for fun- even if i tell her not too... i cant wait till july! she is going to be so much fun! she is so hard headed and has such a strong drive! i think i am a bit insane! bwahahahaha!-- well if anyone living in the Nashua NH area is looking to have a BC play group, i am hear- and i know of a great herding instructor--- thanks guys

A BC play group sounds fun. Do you have pictures of your baby to show us?
