My family is ready to adopt a German Shepherd from a local rescue shelter.
We looked at a 1 yr. old female today named Paige. She was relatively subdued as she was just rescued from the pound yesterday. She had a gentle disposition and interacted well with our 14 month old daughter.
Several questions:
- Paige obviously had a litter not too long ago although she seems to have recovered well. Does having puppies at such a young age impact her in any way?
- One of her eyes was completely black versus the other one her iris was green. Is this a result of injury or is it a genetic trait?
- The rescue shelter felt as if Paige may have been hit by her previous owner as any time they picked up an object and held it up she would shy away. Is there any reason to be overly concerned? My daughter picks up and swings her toys all the time. I'm hoping this does not trigger an agressive reaction.
The shelter goes through a two week socialization process with each dog so we will have several more opportunities to interact with Paige before we make a decision.
Any thoughts or guidance would be appreciated.
- Andrew
