Mixing Breeds

chinamark May 14, 2005 11:19 PM

I'm just curious but would a Rough Collie and a Siberian Husky mix well?

I know the idea of responsible breeders is to improve their own breed but I'm sure alot of people at some time or another have thought I'm sure my dog and that dog would produce gorgeous puppies.

As long as the two adults are healthy and have good temperaments then does it matter what breed they are?

I'm not planning on doing it I'm just curious as to the health and ethical implications.

It is very unethical. Look at all the dogs in shelters and pounds already. There is no reason to breed the mix because there is not a thing the pups could do or be that another well bred dog couldn't. Especially with huskys. So many huskys end up in rescues I think its horrible that anyone breeds them other than people who actually run them or show them.

I don't think anyone that breeds mixes has any respect for what people have been breeding for for hundreds of years. It is insulting. You don't just pick two dogs and say this sounds cool.

There is also the risk you put the female through. WHy do it?

And I hope you realize that gorgoues pups have nothing to do with it. I see gorgoues dogs every day that get dumped off. It does not mean they will have a good life. The people that think that aren't really thinking it through all the way and they are very uninformed. I think anyone that would breed the two together is very irresponcible.

Hi and thanks for taking the time to reply.

I totally agree with all of your points. My pups health is of the upmost concern to me and I wouldn't risk that for anything and especially not for any selfish desire I have in thinking, yeah that dog and that dog would make great pups.

You are right, pounds, shelters, the streets, the world is full of gorgeous unwanted puppies and dogs and that is where people should look first.

I was just having these thoughts yesterday because she hasn't been spayed yet and I had this nagging feeling that once it's done then of course she will never have pups. Naturally in the cold light of day that is the perfect thing for her, healthwise and society wise.

I may look to own another puppy one day and I know I'll be able to find one already out there who really is in need of a good home.

Thanks again
Mark

A training breed like the Collie and a northern, independent breed like the Husky is prone to some unpleasant behaviors that are hard to solve through training. Collies are pretty easy dogs and Siberian Huskies are not easy at all. Chances are that at least some pups in the litter would come to bad ends. Spaying is much safer for your dog. A female dog can die having pups, and she can also have a nice temperament permanently ruined.
