It Worked!!

Jessie226 May 18, 2005 08:10 AM

So the ultrasonic bark eliminator came yesterday (Not a collar, you plug it into the wall) and we tried it out last night, and it worked perfectly! She barked once this morning and that was it. Jason and I could hear her quietly playing with her toys while she waited for Jason to get up with her. Hooray!
I can't wait until we don't need it anymore.

Congrats Jessie

But I can forsee one draw back. Assuming you want her to bark when strangers are around. Maybe someone out there has a solution, because as I see it the barl eliminator would eliminate all barking inside the house.

That is perfectly fine with me! We got her to be a companion, not a guard dog so if she doesn't bark at strangers that is perfectly fine. We are only going to have the box plugged in at night, since it's her early morning barking we wanted to eliminate. We turn it off as soon as we get up. For other barking, I use a squirt gun and it's been working really well. She was barking at me for a while, challenging me for pack position, and since I started using the squirt gun, she hasn't barked at me in over a week! So now, our biggest issue is her jumping up on people. I bought her an anti-jump harness, but I haven't tried it yet. It looks like some kind of S&M devise lol. Other than that, the only other problems we are having is her pulling on the leash, and not going in her crate willingly. She's starting obedience school at the end of the month, so hopefully that will help with her pulling on the leash. Getting her to go in her crate willingly is a challenge, but not a big deal. I have to kind of scoot her in, but she doesn't cry or bark while she is in it (Except for early in the morning), so that may be all we can ask for and thats fine. Oh and she doesn't care for the car, but I think thats just a matter of desensitation. We are going for a 9 hour drive with her at the end of the month to Buffalo and if that doesn't do it, I don't know what will. She doesn't get so nervous that I fear for her health or anything. Just a bit whiny and panty, and occasionally she throws up but hasn't in over a month. For now we're just taking her on short car rides every day and she is doing better. I am hoping the weather will be nice so we can have the windows down when we go, the breeze seems to make a big difference. Wish us luck!

Congrats

Well then barking should soon become a non issue. Most pups do get car sick. Nothing much can be done about that. I hope you plan on frequent stops on your 9 hour drive. Biff seems to enjoy the car rides. Even though the only times she's been in the car was a 2 and a half hour drive home from the kennel and to the vet for shots and spaying. If she somehow sneaks out the front door the only easy way for me to get her is to open the car door and she comes a runnin and jumps right in.

Even at just over a year old she insists on playin catch me if you can. But only in the unfenced front yard. I have a huge back yard that is fenced and she comes a runnin every time I call her. I've worked with her a great deal but seems the front yard is a signal for her to play keep away. I was working with her on a long lead in the front yard but that has to be put on the back burner for a while. While working her last Saturday I got wrenched off my feet by a sudden run and tug. Ended up in the ER and have found I have degenerative bone disease in both my feet. Waiting to see a specialist now. Just hoping this doesn't stop my training days for to long. I am determinded to beat this.

Good luck with your youngster and just be consistant

Thanks! Yes we plan on making lots of stops on the way. At least every hour and a half or so. We are not going to give her any breakfast, and we are just going to give her small amounts at every stop on the way up. I am hoping this will help her not get sick, if she doesn't have much to digest. I am going to put her in her crate in the back, I think she'll be more comfortable and this way I don't have to risk her throwing up on my sister and her brother inlaw in the back seat. She is doing better everyday with the car especially on nice days with the window down. I hope she eventually learns to enjoy the car.
I am so sorry to hear about your bone issues. Be strong, and do what the doctor says, don't strain yourself. You can beat it!
Good luck, and keep us posted. I hope all goes well.
