Is My Dog In Heat?

chinamark May 21, 2005 05:14 AM

A male dog tried to mate with Echo (5 month rough collie) this evening. At least that's what it looked like to me! I pulled them apart as soon as I saw his intentions as I know it's dangerous to do it once it's in action.

I haven't seen any signs in Echo that she has started first heat. No excessive licking, no bleeding and physically her vagina and breasts look puppy like (not that I'm sure how different they'd look otherwise but she looks the same as she did when I got her!)

Could it be that she has started and male dogs are the first to know or was he just happy to see her!??

She's rather young to go in heat, though anything is possible. A urinary tract infection can make a male dog interested. A lot of males are not very discriminating, and their behavior means nothing.
