changing pup's name..

ohmai May 25, 2005 09:11 PM

Would it confuse a puppy, of 8 weeks, if I changed his name? The previous owner had him for 2 weeks, and called him Sticky. I don't really like this name, and I'm wondering if it would be a bad idea to change his name when I get him in the next few days?

Hi, and welcome to the boards.
I don't think it would confuse the dog. He's still very young and has had the name for only a short time. What kind of dog is he? Perhaps you can come back and tell us all about him and share some pictures with us.

I changed mine's from Apple to Echo at 4 months and she took to it no problem. Although admittedly the two names to her probably do sound very similar.
I think it's just basically like teaching a new command and once used with enough repetition and he/she is used to hearing the tone of your voice then you won't have a problem.
Any ideas on the new name?
A lab/husky mix sounds gorgeous. You'll have to post pics!

Yep, I've been really thinking on the name, Eikon (pronounced A-kon; yes, like the singer Akon, if anyone noticed (= ) And two other names I've been thinking of also, are Ty and Beau.

I'd definately post up a picture, but unfortunately I've got to find a way to get a picture of his on the internet!

Eikon sounds good! Plus it has two syllables which will help differentiate between the usual one syllable commands like sit, stay, come, fetch etc.

Maybe just buy a cheap second hand digital camera off Ebay, they're really cheap these days and I find taking pics of your puppy as she grows is invaluable because they change so quickly. I always keep mine on standby for those moments when they do something that is so precious. Although saying that, this morning she was playing with a rabbit in the park and I didn't have it with me, I could have kicked myself!

I know of people who have changed a dog's name when they were 2-3 yrs. old (usually rescues)! There shouldn't be any problem at this age. We changed our youngest dog's name when she was 4 mos. old with no problem- I don't think she liked the name "Cookie" anyway!
