Looking to get a dane puppy

linnea May 28, 2005 01:05 PM

I'm new to this forum, and just thought I'd ask a few questions.

My husband and I are buying our first house, for the sole reason of being able to get dogs.

I'd like to get a puppy, but if I can't find a breeder, I'll get an adult from a rescue.

How do I go about finding a good breeder? Most breeders I've found are really expensive, because their animals are show quality. Is it possible to find less expensive danes, that aren't quite show quality, but still healthy, and responsibly bred?

Also, I've heard good things about both Eagle Pack food, and the BARF diet - which would be more appropriate for a dane?

It will be a few months until I get one - until everything is settled and puppy proofed, so I figured I'd start doing my research now.

I have fed the BARF diet for 5 years and I find that my danes are so much healthier than on kibble so of course I lean in that direction. I think a good book to read if you are going to get a puppy is Grow Your Pups With Bones by Dr. Ian Billinghurst.
