Training to be sociable with other dogs?

KRoman Jun 02, 2005 09:42 AM

I adopted my chihuahua, Amigo, 3 weeks ago. He is great around people but I am concerned about his behavior around other dogs. He will sniff nose with another dog but then all of a sudden will start barking and lunging with his teeth. Amigo is roughly 7 years old. I will be moving soon and we (Amigo and I) will be residing with my mother until I can find a place. My mother has a toy poodle so I am concerned about them getting along. Any suggestions for training? Thanks!!

I would be real careful about letting other dogs get in his face. That could make him more defensive. How he gets along with dogs in the street is not the same as getting along with a dog in the same house. If the Poodle is female, they'll probably do okay. If the Poodle is male, it's quite possible they'll get into a contest of urinating all over the house.
