6 week Chi puppy not acting right

BillM Jun 03, 2005 12:32 AM

I have two Chi puppy's that I got from a friend for free. The one in question was the last one born in the litter and it has a hard time trying to walk. She also has at times low blood sugar and goes somewhat lethargic at times. I little bit of honey and a bottle and she is back active again. My other Chi from the same litter is very active running around playing but the other one just try's to walk and it trips and falls on it's front feet and sometimes falls on her side. I noticed that she looks at you from the corner of her eyes and I was wondering if she has an eye problem that is keeping her from walking correctly. The Vet said he could not find anything physically wrong with her bones and she eats and drinks well now that I'am ontop of her low blood sugar problem. Has anyone out there heard of puppies acting like this!

I'd have the vet check her out more thoroughly.

HI.. I have a 7 week old tea cup chihuahua... She is the runt of her litter and i got her at 5 weeks old because her mom weined them early. Anyway she was fine until we gave her , her first set of shots then she started acting different. She was always active before the shots then after that she didnt want to eat, she just wanted to sleep, and then fri the day she turned 7 wks old she started having like seizures . She couldnt stand up or anything so i rushed her to the vet and he checked her out and gave her some sugar through iv and said her glucose was low... She was doing ok til i got home. Then she didnt want to eat only wanted to sleep and started running a fever. Well he gave me something called nutri cal and said to give it to her three times a day and to get her to eat . Said not to feed her milk but i had to get something down here and goats milk is all she would take. Yesterday she acted like her old self but this morning she couldnt stand up on her front paws.. I gave her her nutri cal, fed her , let her lick on a ice cube, and gave her a cc of childrens motrin and now she is bouncing around everywhere.. I am begining to wonder if she is diabetic.. Dunno much bout them but that is just how it seems to me . Dont know what the motrin does for her but it sure seems to help.. The vet just said she might have been traumatized by the shots but i think there is something more to it.. and was hoping to find someone on here that has encountered the same probs and see if they knew what the deal is... She is pure bred and my hubby paid $150.00 for her ... NO clues.. Anyone that could shed some light on this would be great....

Tiny dogs are highly susceptible to attacks of hypoglycemia, a blood sugar problem, so it is sort of like diabetes. You need to keep working very, very closely with the vet in order to keep her from dying or suffering permanent damage. It's possible she'll need to go on an IV for awhile. Don't delay getting help for her, emergency help if your vet is not available, when she shows symptoms. It could well mean life or death.

Well i have went to the vet and all he said was it was her glucose and that it would line out . But none of this started happening til i got her shots. The lady i got her from said that bc she is so little i should have gave her the 8 in one shot divided and two weeks apart.. Like the three in one, then a week later the other 5. but the vet told me to only wait a couple of days not a whole week. I also talked to the lady i got her from today and she said that she is dehydrating and told me some things to give her to help her rehydrate and mine isnt having probs looking or with her eyes.. The stuff the vet gave me doesnt seem to be working so the home remedies i am doing seem to be really helpin her line back out..

With tiny dogs hypoglycemia is a MAJOR problem. When My puppies are small, and until they reach about six months of age, I always keep down two bowls of water, one plain water, the other with a bit of Kyro light syrup in it (1 tablespoon to 1 quart of water). This will keep the blood sugar up.

Another IMPORTANT thing is to make sure these little ones are eating. Not just eating dry, but a good Protien rich diet. A hard boiled egg, or some boiled chicken breast added to the diet will help a lot. ALSO, make sure these little ones are eating a MINIMUM of FOUR TIMES A DAY.

Lastly, if the condition persists, I would have genetic problems checked into. Hydrocephalus, and liver shunt especially. These can be potentially fatal.

I would hope that the breeder had tested her breeding dogs for gentic problems, and knows the backgrounds to ensure that the pups don't have genetic problems.

In any case... Keep in CLOSE contact with your vet, and have these little guys spayed/neutered as soon as possible to prevent accidental breedings and possible cancer down the road.
