Breeding questions?

baxterbaby Jun 03, 2005 12:42 PM

I have got a 12 week male Chi that is got to be on the best dogs ever. Besides some potty training issues and hating to be left alone he is great around people, children and other dogs. He loves the water and is the best cuddle baby.

So I was thinking that since he is a CKC purebread and is listed as a teacup, I might consider breeding him. But being new to this idea I have a few quesions.

How would I go about finding a female? Is it safe? what age?

I know that if I really want to do this I will really research it, but I just wanted some general questions answered.

Thank you for your help. If I did it right there should be a picture of him with this.

CKC as in Continental Kennel Club? If so, not a good idea to breed him. He may be a great dog, but if he is not from the right genetics, he can throw very sick or bad temperament dogs in a mating. At a minimum, he should be AKC registered if he came from the USA.

In my opinion the first step is to seek out reputable breeders who have been envolved with the breed for most of their life. Find the people who know EVERYTHING about the breed and are driven by a true passion for preserving the breed. Then build relationships with these people to help guide you and teach you.

I am not a breeder, nor will I breed. But I do have a strong opinion about it based on what I learned growing up - strays, dumped, animals and breedings without enough planning resulting in unhealthy pups. While I no longer have a Chi in my home they will always have a special place in my heart. They are unique little dogs with so much personality. They also have some health issues that anyone breeding should deeply look into prior to any breeding.

A great place to start is the Chihuahua Club of America - The Chihuahua Club of America. It looks like they are doing some renovation on the site so I'd suggest going to the Site Map and looking at the Breed Information, Breed Standard, Code of Ethics, and Mission Statement to start. If this information enhances your desire to persue breeding then my suggenstion is to look up some breeders that are members of the club.

I hope this helps.
