Trying to Make a Decison About Helping a Neglected Cocker Spaniel

colorfulcritters Jun 03, 2005 11:36 PM

Hello, I've been offered a cocker spaniel that's been chained alone most of its time outside. The dog has an owner, but she asked me if I'd take it. The only thing is, there's a problem.

The dog is extremely hyper and I live in a small apartment. My apartment is just a studio. The dog also whines and howls when I leave the apartment, so I think I might get complaints. I believe this may be why the owner has put it outside, away from people. I'll have to chain it up outside like the other owner is doing too, because my neighbors may complain, unless I can train this dog.

I told the owner I couldn't take it for this reason, but am still contemplating what to do, for the poor dogs' sake. It whined and cried when I took it back to its chained doghouse. I think it's a smart dog and really in need of affection, but I just don't know if I can afford to help it out. Yet my heart is a little distraught over the poor pooch, and I'm in need of some helpful advice.

If left outside, I fear too it will die of heartworm. They don't give them shots where I live. I'm in Asia.

Well, they do make bark collars to keep them from barking when your gone. If you had to you could use one of the collars for the dog to wear only while your away. The hyperness can be helped with proper exercise and interaction as most dogs will become hyper if chained all the time. Best of luck deciding whether you can help this poor dog, hope these suggestions help. I own a rescued cocker spaniel, and he is a wonderful pet. If the dog is still young that helps because the habits will be easier to change. If not, it is still possible. Just make sure the dog has no aggression problems from being chained and that it likes people, which most cockers do. Good luck!
