Is Purina One with beef a good healthy dog food for my Chihuahua? Any suggestions appreciated.

I'm not a Purina fan. If I were feeding a toy dog, I'd either give the frozen BilJac I give my dogs (the bags may be too big for a toy to finish, though, and it may not be sold in your area) or canned food. For tooth cleaning I'd give good chew toys (not rawhide, pig's ears, macho stix, chew hooves or greenies). The last time I looked into it, the Iams canned seemed pretty nutritious.

I looked at my local food store and Walmart but didn't see and of the Biljac. I'm trying a different type of dog food. I'm wondering with not to give the hides and chew things? Thanks for replying.

Hi Tammy,
The food stores don't usually carry the special foods. If you have a Petco or a Petmart, you would probably find it there. You can go crazy with all the dog foods out there. Try to find one that doesn't have too many fillers such as corn in it. As far as the chew toys are concerned, many raw hides products are not good...depending where they come from. I have a Shih Tzu and she just loves the Booda Bones and they've kept her teeth very clean. I've also given her the Dentabones and she loves them as well. Just make sure when the bone gets rather small, that you throw it away. I got the medium size and they lasted a long time.

Do you have any pictures of your little one. We would love to see one. Perhaps you would also like to join us in Small Dog Chat.

Hi, I live in the mountains where theres not many big stores. There's a Petsmart is all. I tried her on Pedigree and the very next day there was a huge change in her poo poo. I was so happy and I think she was too. I've tried to put a picture of her in the reply. I hope it comes through. I'm new to doghobbist. Your dogs are precious and I'm looking foward to Pet Chat on Thursday. Thank you so much for the invite.

It's difficult, Tammy, to search for different foods when you're limited in the stores you can check out but just find one that works well for Pookie. Loved the picture. She sure is adorable. We'll be looking forward to seeing you Thursday in Small Dog Chat. The link to the chat room will be at the top of the page each Thursday so you'll be able to get there easily.

I have a Chi and Silky Terrier and Yorkshire Terrier. I'm feeding them science diet now but I used Natual Wonder and Iams. Toy dogs are so small and have been know to bite off pieces of rawhide and other chews that are to large to pass through them. They can get stuck and tear their insides. So it isn't recommended that they be given those things.

My parents found Avoderm small bites worked great for their Chis years ago. My gramma and I also ended up migrating our chi kids to it too. That was about 10 years ago.

It's worked wonderfully for all our chi kids - a total of 7 Chis.

(Past tense is because we lost three seniors last year, they were 15, 16, and 17 yrs old - my parents and gramma still continue to feed it to their collective remaining 4.)

I'll look for Avoderm. You have cute chis. I just got Pookie a year ago. She's 3 now, the love of our lives. And I'm very happy to know the ages of your chis, that's a great long life for them. I look fowards to a long life with Pookie. Thank you.

Hi...I really prefer the holistic dog foods with no animal by-products and no fillers. There are lots of good ones out there, you just have to do a lot of research to find the right one for you. I just thought I'd pass along a link that a friend sent to me about Iams and Eukanuba (same company), and after I saw this I won't support the large companies that use these kind of lab tests.
