Whens the right time to quit posting ears?

doberman02 Jun 10, 2005 01:29 PM

I took down my dobermans ears today and he can hold the ears straight up at times, but the ears are not very hard/stiff. As in when he runs they bounce up and down and when hes not, i guess you could say attentive, his ears are straight out. This is my first doberman so i dont know when to quit posting his ears. Ive seen dog shows where the ears are straight up all the time. Thats how i would like my dobermans ears to be. so should i keep posting or is this as good as my dobermans ears will get? He is is 5 1/2 months old and has the long ear cut. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Nick

I stopped taping my ears for my 15 week old 5 days ago and the tips are starting to turn inward. Taping those ears up every week (going to the vet) was what i had planned to do for at least 5 months, but my vet told me he thought they looked ready. What im going to do now is use the no tape method using skin bond and mole foam. I understand this works very well and can stay on up to three weeks before falling off.

The long cut can take a long time to get right. Go to this forum and tell them about how the ears are and they may be able to help you more. http://www.network54.com/Forum/11341

My boy doesn't even have a show cut and he took months and months.

If the ears are standing good without drooping, then you are probably almost done. I would contine to post until your pup is done teething @ around 6 to 7 months. If the tips are still wobbly, then keep posting. If you take the posts out and notice that they are drooping when your dog is alert then put them back in posts immediately.

Don't expect your Doberman to hold their ears erect all the time - they only do so when something catches their attention. They have the ability to carry their ears in many different positions depending on their mood. The reason you see them up in the show ring all the time is because the handler is holding bait in front of them - LOL! They are also often trained a command for "ears" - I trained my Doberman to put up her ears in a show stack specifically for the show ring.
