APB Bloodlines?

brad_j Jun 17, 2005 10:26 AM

I don't own a pit yet, but I've been reading up on them trying to learn as much as possible before I buy, and I'm having a hard time finding information on what these blood lines mean. An example of what I'm talking about is:

Mason/Carver/Watchdog bloodline.
Razoredge/Gotty bloodline, and the list goes on and on.

I've seen probably a dozen or so different combinations of bloodlines listed.

Where can I find a list of all bloodlines and what they mean.

The bloodline just refers to the breeder who bred those dogs, just do a google search say for razor's edge and you should find their kennels or offspring originating from that kennel to see what kind of quality they are breeding.
Certain bloodlines can have certain problems with health and so forth so it's best to read up on the lines beforehand and search for as many dogs as possible from those lines to see which line suits you best.
Make sure the sire and dam have both been health tested especially for cataracts, heart disease and hip dysplasia, alot of people will tell you they've been tested (a vet health check isn't a proper test) so see the certified proof

If you want to show your puppy the best bet is to buy from proven conformation championed stock, alot of breeders are straying far from the proper APBT standard.

If your not interested in showing, go and have a look at the shelters you'll have plenty to choose from
Goodluck with it and don't forget to post a pic when you find the right pup for you.

Thanks a lot, that really helped. I want to get a pit to compete in weight pulling, I've been reading up on this and I'm more interested in that then dog shows. I've seen a lot of breeders advertise their dogs to be a lot larger then the 'standard' APBTs, would you suggest I look into the bloodlines of larger APBTs for this activity? Or, should these dogs be avoided at all cost?

I personally would avoid the larger breed pits but thats just me, i notice that alot of those larger breeders don't actually health test but do give garentees on health, say if your pup gets hip dysplasia they'll replace it with another pup, but really thats crazy who'd want their beloved dog replaced when it shouldn't have gotten hip dysplasia in the first place.
On alot of those big breed pits you'll notice that their elbows are warped out to hold up that extra weight what that says to me is elbow dysplasia elbow dysplasia elbow dysplasia.
A pit should have nice straight legs and this would help with weight pull, a big dog with warped elbows isn't going to do much good, a smaller masculine dog can actually pull more than a huge fat pit.
I don't know much about weight pull as it's just staring to get off the ground over here but i think they pull in weight classes so size isn't really important it's the dogs drive and overall muscle mass.

I was just on the IWPA's (International Weight Pulling Association) website trying to get a better understanding of the sport and they are divided into weight class not breed.

I want a male and the UKC standard weight for a male should be between 35 and 60 pounds. I've never seen any pits advertised to be that size. As a matter of fact, a lot of the breeders 'claim' the females are over 60lbs. The most common weight I've seen for males is 75 to 90 pounds. That cuts the field down a lot.
