Basic Breeding Question...

Doug89 Jun 17, 2005 09:31 PM

Hi, I have no interest in breeding dogs right now but was just wondering how it is done. What is the basic setup? Do you just lock the two animals in a room and let nature take its course? Or do hyou have to wait until the female is in heat? How do you know if its in heat? Just some basic questions cause i was wondering how it was done. Im content with my little spayed female Beagle Maggie, but i was inquisitive of how the whole process works. Thanks!

This differs based on what breed, whether the stud and bitch have been bred before, and other factors.

However, the breeding would never be unattended.

And the first step doesn't involve the animals at all... it would be knowing and understanding your chosen breed so you can do a comprehensive pedigree analysis and select the best possible mate for your bitch. Then you have your required health screenings.

Typically when you start out, you'll have an experienced mentor in the breed, and she or he will help you with the practical aspects.
