LItterbox Training?

Doug89 Jun 18, 2005 11:56 PM

Hello, I have read that chihuahuas can be ltter trained, is this true? If so that would be great! Do any of you guys have litter trained chihuahuas? Was it easy or hard to train them? This fact would pretty much make my decision between a chihuahua and a Fennec Fox. I am interested in the little Teacup Chihuahuas is there anything i should know about them that is very important? Thanks for your help!

PS-Would a chihuahua be better off with a companion? Would opposite sexes get along better than same sexes or does it matter? Thanks again!

Here is a link to a web page on the Chihuahua Club of America web site that talks about "teacup" Chis. Please consider it carefully.
Chihuahua Club of America Tea Cup Statement

I have heard of people litter training their Chis but no one in my family has done it. My girl was trained to use a pad though, we had the washable kind like a hospital uses for patients.

Regarding your last two questions, in my opinion there isn't a black and white answer, it depends on the particular dog(s).

Good luck!

OH NO NO NO NO NO!!! While I have heard that canines can be litter box trained it leads to lots of little "accidents" opposed to paper/pad training or going outside. While this may be a reason you choose not to have a chi, I do not condone ANY person to buy an exotic animal. It is so cruel, they get "plucked" from their mothers and never get to be around other animals of their species again. No matter how much you think an exotic animal is tame, it will never be tame. Wild animals are WILD animals. They are born with the instincts to survive, they do not care about your welfare. In their habitats its a dog eat dog world and they have the natural drive to survive. Many exotics that are purchased from backyard breeders or imports are surrendered to shelters or zoos for this very reason. If you really care for and respect animals you would be kind enough to pass on the exotics. Another word of advice, choose wisely on a chi. There are no such things as tea cups, and very small chis can have severe health problems. If the breeder is uneducated like the breeder I got my first chi from there can be grave consequences. I lost my dear Tinkerbell on V-day this year because the breeder said she had given her her 1st set of shots and de-wormed the little girl. I believed her and by the time I figured it out it was 2 late, she was gone.
I suggest you hold off on getting ANYTHING until you do some serious in-depth research. I wish you the best and hope you find a sweet, healthy new furbaby. They are a great joy and an absolutely WONDERFUL breed.--Marie

Washable pad? Sounds like a great idea. We are starting to feel the cost of the disposal pads (and cringe at how much are garbage has increased). Are these designed for this purpose? Any other information on the pads? thnx
