New Member-New corn Humidity Question

sillygirl Oct 09, 2003 03:47 PM

Hello everyone,

Just wanted to drop a note and introduce myself. I'm Chantel and the proud new mom of a 4 mo Charcoal corn who is an awsome feeder (and a pig I might add). Been lurking here for a few days, decided to post.

I have a 29 gallon set up natural with slate slabs of different sizes set around to give him plenty of hide spots on both cool and warm side and a nice big branch to climb on. Plus the other basics like heating and water dish big enough to soak in. (yeah yeah, i read way too much about corns before i even brought him home)

Anyway, I know they need SOME humidity but can't get a good specific about what that range should be. Our house runs about 30-50% under normal circumstances and lower in the winter due to the heater (I live in Colorado). Does the corn need more/less? Should I be misting him or providing a shed box with damp moss.... Sorry I get obsessive about providing the best setups for my critters to mimic their natural environment, so any advice would be welcome.

Thanks

You have a couple of options.
The humidity doesn't have to be very high for corns.
So, you could wait until your snake sheds. If it sheds without problems then the humidity will be fine.
If you tend to be a bit nervous you could cover most of the screen top. This is assuming you have a screen top that is.
What I do on the natural tank set-ups is cover about 85 to 90% of the screen top to help maintain humidity.
An oversized water dish helps also.

I have 2 males and their last sheds were bad due to low humidity. I have been working on ways to increase the humidity in the enclosure and I find that simple misting is insufficient at the time of sheds. Keep in mind that that corns are typically low humidity snakes so keeping them at a good moisture level is really only an issue at times of shed. Try reading Melissa Kaplan's caresheets at anapsid.org. She has a great section on microclimates that will help out on what to do during a shed. This is one guy's opinion... If anyone can offer advice on how to help me with my shed problem, I'd appreciate it!

Yes I have a screen top on my terrarium and a large enough water bowl for him (her?) to still use when fully grown (9" dia). Which made me think....I've been changing out the water about 3x a week and notice that it's usually more then half of what I filled it to when I started. So either my corn is part camel or it's just evaporating a lot in there.

I guess I'll wait till it sheds and adjust from there and the way it eats I am guessing that will happen fairly soon.

I'm not sure I want to cover part of the screen though to keep in humidity, it's like fort knox to get in as it is with 8 screen locks on it (yes I'm paranoid it's in my bedroom!)and the light fixtures. But misting bottles are plentiful around the house with my other lizards/frogs and cats that misbehave occassionally.
