Training an older dog

rachel01 Jun 26, 2005 09:30 PM

I have a pomeranian about 2 1/2 years of age...she is a wonderful dog except for being potty trained...and I take full blame for that. I never crate trained her (she has full run of the house) and I have her going on pee pee pads, unfortunately she still has accidents and misses the pads. My question is this- should I hire a trainer or can I try and crate train her at this age, or any other suggestions? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Trainers can be very helpful with housetraining. A trainer can come to your house and help you set things up. Could be what you need. I also have several housetraining articles at this link:

Absolutely you can crate train the dog...I didn't get my pom until he was older and instantly started crating him at home when he couldn't be watched. Don't expect instant results it will only set you up for disappointment.

Set up a schedule and stick to it....crate the dog when can't be watched, take dog out right away, let dog go potty then reward with treat or praise.

Good Luck!!
