Aggressive Akita/Warning very long..sorry!!

Akitalover Jul 05, 2005 02:04 PM

Hello, I need some input.
I have a 6yo fixed male Akita. I came home Sunday night to find my dog was loose, he greated me as I pulled in. While I am gone my dog is on a run. I got a call the next morning from the animal control officer and she proceeded to tell me that my dog got loose and one of my neighbors was walking his dog and my dog came up to them and was being very friendly, so the neighbor thought he would bring my dog home, with his dog in tow, my dog followed. Once they got across the street from my house my dog flipped out and attacked his dog. I told animal control that I would pay for vet bills and they told me to keep the dog in the house while I am gone. I have no problem doing that. Their dog has been in our yard twice while my dog has been tied and they have had a scrap match before. This is the first time my dog has gotten loose. I got another call from animal control today and they told me the dog didn't eat or drink and they couldn't get it in the car so the vet had to come pick it up, they are keeping it overnight for observation.
I am very much upset over this and I'm more than willing to take full responsiblity for this, but I am curious as to why no one came and took my dog and why was my dog left to run the neighborhood. I didn't ask these questions because I am very upset by this and I want to remedy the situation. I don't want to get taken to the cleaners. I feel that they should have brought the dog to the vets Sunday night if it was that bad. They find out that I will pay for the bills and then they send the dog to the vets. We fenced in the back yard yesterday. Please tell me what you all think.
Thanks!!!

I have no specific info, but you need to find out the laws in your area about this matter & document EVERY facet of info from every source.

Get all paperwork from AC/vet's office, the reports made at the time of incident...

I'd not make any comments to anyone & perhaps seek legal council.

After any incident like this, most neighbors are probably going to be 'on guard'. It will be said, 'what if a child had been there?' so even if the other dog 'might' have incited yours to attack, the bigger dog is going to cause the fear/anger reactions.

Its good that you got that fence, hope its secure - you might think about an electric fence to go inside the outer fence.
