Potty Training is so confusing!

nightcrawler Jul 07, 2005 11:51 AM

Hi, first off thanks for reading my post. I'm having a terrible difficulty with potty training for my 10 week old chi. first off, she has a play pen area i blocked off with her bed and toys and some newspapers, she pees in the newspapers most of the time. Also, i take her out after meals to poop, but she doesn't go all the time. Lastly, at night i take her upstairs to sleep with some other newspapers, which she doesn't go in at all and poops and pees in any random spot. am i confusing my chi with too many places to go poop and pee?

oh yeah, i don't have a crate (pretty sure i'll be getting one over the weekend though).

Thank you for your time.

Hey - my Chi turned 9 months old today. I had a pretty hard time with him as well, but what ultimately worked with me was to have him on a leash 24/7 and it was attached to me. Everyone where I went, the dog went along so I could watch him when he was about to go to the bathroom. Then, I'd rush him outside to potty. He sleeps in my bed w/ me, so he doesn't have accidents at night, but I kept him in an exercise pen w/ newspaper and he always goes on that.

Try the leash method, it really worked. He no longer wears the leash, and he just started walking to the front door when he has to potty about two months ago on his own.

I thought he would never learn, but they do. You just must be consistent and try to take them out around the same times everyday if possible. Then they learn when you will take them out. I couldn't really do this way, as to why I used the whole leash thing that was given to me as advice and worked really well.

Granted, I still always must keep an eye on him just incase b/c he's still a puppy hehe

Hopes this helps

What an adorable photograph! I sympathize with you. It took us 1 month to potty train our little one, Lulubelle. The crate helped tremendously. I think the important part is not letting her drink anything 3 hours before going to bed and immediately taking her out when she wakes up. Good luck.
