JRT hates walking on leash

TooshS Jul 19, 2005 04:53 PM

My 12-week old puppy has provided us so much fun and happiness over the last four weeks. The recurring issue we cannot seem to overcome is his distaste for leash-walking. Even when he goes out to potty, he dislikes being "led." Sometimes, he sits down and refuses to walk. We want to take him out for walks, but it's become battle of the wits and is very frustrating for both our puppy and us.

There are times we have had successful walks, usually starting with him pulling back on the leash and resisting walking. Sometimes he will give up and then walk happily. There are other times that he will never give up.

We don't want to pull him or risk hurting him. Coaxing, praising and treating him has not brought us any progress. He has "caught on" to us trying to bribe him.

I suspect that this is a dominance battle. Our puppy wants to have his way. When he is off-leash, he walks happily after us; however, this is not safe for him.

He takes other obedience commands very well - sit, down, shake, etc.

Any advice surrounding this situation is greatly appreciated. We have been leash training for 3-weeks now.

Hi,
I had the same problem walking my Shih Tzu when she was a young pup. She could get very stubborn. She would sit down and refuse to move. Sometimes she wanted to walk one way while I wanted to walk another way. Since it usually didn't really matter which way we walked, I walked the way she wanted to go. She has pretty much outgrown this but she can still have her stubborn days. You might want to enroll your pup in a puppy class and pick up some tips. Good luck and hope things work out well for you and the pup.

I doubt this is about dominance. Here's a link to an article I wrote about leash training for puppies:
