Leash Training Problems

nacholover Jul 22, 2005 06:18 PM

I am having problems leash training my 6 month old Nacho. It's a struggle getting the leash on his collar. He seems to fight me for it. I tried putting it on while he eats (as previously advised) but he just gets distracted and tries to get away. When I finally get the leash on, most of the time he chews it. When he doesn't chew it and I try to walk him, he doesn't budge. He just freezes and looks at me. I tried offering him a treat as motivation, but he'll just stand on his hind legs and "beg" for it. I've had Nacho for less than a week. His previous owner spoiled him rotten. Any advice would be great! Thanks!

I would attach the leash to a gentle harness (maybe even a cat harness) for this breed, not to the collar. Teach him to follow you for the treat without his leash on, and put the leash on for him to just wear when you're not doing anything, so he can get used to it. Then you can start picking up the end of it and gently working into walking together.

My tiny chihuahua would not allow me to put a leash on her either, but buying a "body harness" leash instead. I waited until I knew she was hungry, got a snack in my hands (and made sure she knew it, and walked ahead of her showing her the snack. She followed. Within 3-4 days, she got the hang of walking with the harness on. Good luck.
