Barking !!! Poodle !!!! HELP!

parisoe Jul 22, 2005 08:14 PM

I have a 4 year old poodle whom in the last few years has gotten worse at barking at everything and now we are in a smaller house so it is getting to be real anoying. I have a wife and 2 small kids and my wife is ready to get rid of him but the kids and I wouldnt have it. I need to get him to stop and I cant aford lessons or somthing like that. He barks when he hears anything or when some one comes to the door (then he goes nuts) or even if he sees anything in the yard 50 feet away (hes barking right now at who nows what) Please any help would be appreciated Im willing to try anything to keep from having to get rid of him.

Thanks,
Josh

He really does need for you to take him to a training class, especially since he lives with children. In the meantime, the following article might help:

We also had some barking issues. We tried everything we could think of and nothing worked. Ultimately, we opted for an ultrasonic bark eliminator, used it for ONE day, and never had to again...

WOW were did you get it?

Ebay actually, but it is made by sharper image. It is NOT a collar, but a box that plugs into the wall and ommits an ultrasonic frequency that only the dog can hear. I've heard it does not work for everyone, but it worked wonders for us. They are a bit on the expensive side, I got mine brandnew from ebay for $25, but you might find a used one for cheaper. I just thought it would be much better than any type of collar since I heard that they can get caught in the bars.
If you use one, make sure there are no other noises going on that might set it off. I only used ours at night, I don't know how it would react to traffic or the TV.
Good luck!

Josh i FEEL your pain. we rescued an 11 yr old poodle. I actually begged my vet to check into hormone injections into his vocal cords to at least DEEPEN his high pitched bark. oy vey

In desperation cases, you might consider a citronella collar or even a shock collar. The citronella ones supposedly work very well though.
