Why is the pitt bull such a rare breed is there alot that are not true pitts? If that is so what are the characteristics of a true pit, any comparison pics are appreciated, my german shepard just died two weeks ago and I always love having a large dog in the house and was thinking of a pitt, they are very beautiful dogs and just wanted to start my homework on them as soon as I can, by the way my shepard didnt die we put had our vet put him down, he was almost 17 years old and I love shepard but getting another wouldnt feel right

I am very sorry for the loss of your dog. You were so lucky to have him such a good long time!

The pit bull is a type of dog, not a breed. The American Pit Bull Terrier is a specific breed, and is a pit bull (but not all pit bulls are APBTs).

You can get specific information on the APBT here:

www.canismajor.com/dog/amerpit.html

You can see lots of photos in the APBT Photo Gallery here:

There are some books on APBTs in the Terrier Bookstore here on DogHobbyist:

www.doghobbyist.com/books/?sub_sect=15

If you are interested in pit bulls in general, I would strongly recommend the wonderful book Bandit: Dossier of a Dangerous Dog by Vicki Hearne.
