Thinking of getting a Wolf Hybrid puppy

sheki Jul 31, 2005 02:20 AM

I am thinking of getting a puppy - I want a dog I can bond very well with and think that this could be a good dog also because of the strong spiritual energy they have. I live on a farm with horses and there are many other pets around as well. I want to be able to socialize with my dog and am hoping to learn more about their behavior and what I need to do to raise a puppy to be gentle and very well socialized to other humans and other animals - especially small ones including rabbits and chickens.

Any advise would be appreciated.
Thank you

maybe you should get a mid-low grade if your going to have so many animals around,I have dogs with a prey drive, and it's hard on the cows around here(along with the squirrels that keep showing up dead),a wolf with a prey drive?yikes!

I have a six month old puppy who has been well socialized with other dogs as well as people. He is 73%. I think every animal is different but he seems very dog like. He looks just like a wolf, but loves every person he meets. Not a wolf trait from what I have seen and heard. We got him at five weeks old and started socializing him with people immediately. He goes to PetSmart, Tractor Supply, a few restaruants allow dogs if they have outside seating. He will lay ubder the table when we eat. I saw his brother from the same litter and he didn't like people at all. He liked my dog though. My best advice is do your research, find a good breeder, and spend lots of time and show it as many different things and places as possible. Your animal is only what you make it. Good luck

Sheki,

I hope I don't come across as too harsh, but I hope you did plenty of research before acquiring your new wolfdog pup. They are very different than keeping domestic dogs, especially as they grow into maturity. Here are a few sites that I've found useful as I've been researching wolfdogs:

http://www.kc.net/~wolf2dog/index.html

http://www.inetdesign.com/wolfdunn/

http://users3.ev1.net/~pamthompson/

Sorry if I sounded a bit harsh, but too many of these beautiful animals end up in shelters through no fault of their own, but because their owners did not understand what it would take to kepe one. A wolfdog is not a dog, and you can't expect it to act like one. Depending on content, it may be more or less "wolfy" i n behavior, but any wolfdog owner is in for quite a unique, and potentially very fulfilling, experience!

I was going to suggest that since you were concerned about your livestock and other pets, that you could adopt an older wolfdog with a known personality and "record" for that sort of behavior. Check out this site if you ever consider bringing another wolfdog into your home.

Anyway, enjoy learning about your new wolfdog, and I hope that you become fast friends together.

Yes, definitely, the pup looks to be low-content (and so cute!). Thanks for the reply, it's good to know that I didn't come down too hard.

Yeah, we might know each other from somewhere... I'm on the Fennec Fox and Phoenix Exotics lists, and I post on Kingsnake fairly often... so you might have seen my email or username pop up from time to time.

what a wonderfull looking little pup indeed! real good looking animal.

I don't know who the breeder was, and its not really a big deal though, but if that animal has wolf in it.....its so far distance you wont see any traits at all, which, from what your describe is your intent and your environment, a good thing. Mid and high content wolfdogs, and even some low's, need constant supervision and escape proof containment, they are not the kind of "dog" you let roam on the property and "socialize" with the other animals.

Looks like Mal or Husky... again..very very good looking animal.

Having been in the wolfdog community since 1984.. I can tell you, breeders love to market thier animals to unsupecting folks at a much higher content than they really are.... and to quote a "percent"...thats practically impossible to give percent...there's no way to tell how many wolf genes the animal has to that enth degree. The real wolfdog world goes by : low content (approx 50% and below)...mid content (approx. 85% and below to 50, some call the higher end "high mids", which is fine) and high content... 86% to 99.9% approx). The F factor is very important in the scheme (generations removed from the wild).

for instance, this is my girl, she's a Mid content, F3.

this is right at 5 weeks, wolfdogs, mid and higher at min., ears stand errect by now:

this is her now, at 2.5 yrs old

I keep her socialized, she goes to PetsMart, PetCo, etc... but I still need to be onguard, espescially when our male golden retriveer is near her, she is very protective as he helped raise her.......

enjoy the new addition to your family, and good luck all the way thru.

Oh my, what an absolutely beautiful animal! I am new to this forum (I generally frequent the Mixed Breed and Shiba Inu forums). My husband has wanted a wolfdog since before I met him, but living in a small apartment until recently, it was not a possibility. And now, having 2 large dogs and wanting a baby soon, it is really not the right time at all. But, it won't stop us from dreaming, and looking at other people's wolfdogs!!! I just had to comment on your pictures, she is just an amazingly gorgeous creature :-D I am sure you're proud to have raised her...
