KDavis?somebody?trying to help injured dog!

my great grandad has a ridgie,Pete, and I have his daughter,Gertie, though due to college, they are both being cared for there,as no one else will take such a large, active puppy

Pete got in a fight,as you can see from the post above,I've convinced my great grandad to let me spay Gerty,Pete's 10 years old, never been fixed,he feels it would shame or lessen Pete somehow, well,Pete's old,his back leg bothers him because a brilliant relitive of mine hit him with a car,now his front leg and his face have deep bite marks,he's never came into the house, even when my grandad would try to get him out of extreme elements, yesterday,he didn't want out of the house,I told him it was a sighn that Pete's in a lot of pain, and possibly scared of whatever dog got him in this condition,I was told of the time Pete killed a relitives pit bull when a dog was in heat, and came out unscathed,of course, this was before he had ever been hit by a car,and he was much younger, but, that I had insulted Pete by suggesting he could be scared,if you haven't done the math already, the dogs walking on two legs, and there's still enough fights at night to suggest someones in heat...
I tried to look at the cuts,of course with little kids around,I got under the truck with Pete,as I understood why he wouldn't come out,and my brilliant relitives were going to push the truck with the injured dog under it....I put peroxide and antibiotic cream on his face, but part of it's swollen,he's quit eating, everyone says"well,he never ate much for his size"...I don't have to take his temp to tell the infections given him a fever,I'm guessing THATS why he quit eating, and his hips are starting to show,Pete's owner doesn't believe in doctors,he never sees one himself, and again, though taking Gerty to get fixed is ok as she's my dog, taking Pete to a vet is almost an insult,he's old fashioned, but the dog is his best friend,I don't know what he'll do if Pete dies, and yet,he doesn't think/doesn't want to hear the conditions seriouse, and thinks I can take care of Pete and drain the swelling....just after getting the basic crusty stuff with an alcohol swab,Pete was growling and backing up(he's never growled at anyone before, but he was in pain and relitively trapped,he didn't mind the peroxide or neosporin as much)I wouldn't be able to open up anything without heavy seditives or getting bit!he needs a vet,or the care a vet would provide!I don't know what to do,as again,I don't know what my great grandad will do without Pete,I think if the fever was brought down where he'll resume eating and the swelling was opened up and doctored, then he'll be fine, but how to do thats another thing.....

Perhaps the owner can't afford vet care, or thinks he can't. If he's trusting you to doctor the dog, I bet he'd trust you to take the dog to the vet if you pay the vet bill. That may be the dog's only hope. Sounds very serious.

well, the folks I'm living with have been telling me I can often convince him to do things he wouldn't otherwise do,thats how Gerty's getting spayed, but I had to get a lot of help to pay for that,he ceartainly can't afford any vet bills due to a few things that have come up,it's hard to push someone like that,as you don't always know when they'll no longer trust you,I've got him cleaning cuts now twice a day
I've got a few ideas now, which, since I've been called "militant critter freak"in an earlier arguement just for going over and starting a clean up routine, than I'm about to tick some people off, maybe I AM soft, doesn't matter,a caring intelligent dog we've had for 10 years shouldn't slowly die of fever/infection or because he can't defend himself when others come around....
might be further on convincing him,he noticed how much Pete fears getting cleaned up.....but is sluggish in his self defense
