Freezing on a leash

fr8trainch Aug 08, 2005 10:02 PM

My new puppy, Duke (13 weeks old, lab mix) has no problem with his collar. He does however have a problem with a leash. As soon as the leash goes on, he freezes. He will stand there and just occasionally shiver. I want to get him in obedience classes but know I can't do this unless he's able to go on a leash. I am currently just putting a leash on him and letting him walk around with it. He seems to be getting used to it but when he goes outside, he still freezes. Any help would be appreciated.

You are doing the right thing by just letting Duke drag the leash in the house. You might want to even offer treats when you put the leash on him to have him associate the leash with really good things. Try your best to not give treats when he's "frozen" in place, but the moment he is acting normal with the leash on, giev treats and praise. It shouldn't take too long. ALso, starting out in classes and bringing your puppy in carried and working with a trainer who can see the issue in person might be ideal for this pup.
