I have a 10 month old female. We got her when she was three months old. We have been trying to potty train her ever since. She caught on for a little while and will still try real hard to hold it. We just moved last week and we do not have a fenced backyard yet...boooo. It seems like she is getting much worse. Every morning at between 2:30 and 4:00 she gets up and does #1 and #2 in the dining room. Last night we tried closinh our bedroom door thinking she would not go in there cause that is where she was, but we were wrong. We crate both our dogs when we are gone and they do well. Should I make her sleep in it too? That just seems like a lot of time in there. What else can we do? Thanks

Start with a check up from the veterinarian. There could be something wrong physically. That's very common.

Well, I must tell you, I had the SAME problem with my puppy Duncan, a JRT/pug. When we rescued him he had spent the first 3 months of his life in a cage where he was used to going potty where he slept. It was absolutly exhausting trying to break him of this habit, considering he slept on my bed. However, he is much better now.

Here are a few tips that really helped me. First, I began feeding Duncan in the morning, and leaving just alittle bit of food in a dish inside his crate during the day (I crate him as well). By 5 or 6 at night I remove the food completely. Then, I make sure to take him out several times before bed time, and once RIGHT before I get in to bed. Another tip would be to make sure that the food you are feeding him does not contain corn or animal by-products, which my vet told me produces much more #2.

Honestly, we still have accidents occasionally, but now Duncan goes on the floor. I keep my door closed, so that I can catch when he goes while I am sleeping much quicker.
I hope that I was able to help you!

Have you considered paper training? I know it's time consuming but it might work for you, especially since you don't have a fenced in backyard. My JRT, Roscoe, just turned 7 months yesterday, and he still uses newspapers. We live in an apartment, and it's just not possible for him to go outside in this environment.

We had him paper-trained almost immediately after adopting him (he was 12 weeks). At first, he got LOTS of treats, and every time he went on the papers, my husband and I went crazy telling him what a good boy he was. We just got very excited, and soon he learned that potty on the papers=happy mommy and daddy, plus treats! Now, he won't go anywhere else in our apartment. Now, I just place four squares of 2-3 page thick newspapers on the floor by our door, so that when we move do move to a place where he can go outside, he will automatically know that he should go to the door if he needs to potty.

I really hope that helped, and good luck!
