From Paper Training to House Breaking

Papillon Aug 09, 2005 06:32 PM

Hi

I just got my 5 month old male Papillon puppy yesterday. He has been going on papers his whole life but I would like to train him to go only outdoors. I know this is only day 2 and it takes time but I have never house broken a dog that had been going on papers for 5 months.

I follow all the rules that you are suppossed to do when house breaking.

He has a regular meal schedule in which I take him outside afterwards. Since he has never been out to eliminate before, he just walks around, and he doesn't like grass.

He holds it until we come back inside to the papers. I was just outside with him for 15 min after dinner and as soon as we came in he went on the papers.

I have also tried putting some of his poo outside so he gets the drift and also putting newspaper out there.

I would have stayed out longer but it is raining.

How do I make this transition?

Thanks!

Hi,
I've never done it myself but you might want to take a newspaper outside with you for a few trips when you take him out and see if he'll go on that. If he does, after a few trips, stop using the newspaper and see if he'll go outside without it. You might also want to take one of his favorite treats outside and when he does go, give him a little treat. Don't do it each time but continue to do it for a time until he consistently goes outside without the paper. Good luck to you.

My pupps was dead set on eliminating in his crate and on my bed for months. What finally did it was bringing him to my in-laws and letting him run with their dogs outside. He saw them go, and I guess it clicked that it was okay to do that. It still took a while after for him to really get house trained, and we still have accidents. One thing that I have learned is to put the papers in front of the door, so that when he goes to the door I know he has to go and take him out.
I wish you the best of luck!
