MY dog is ill

oldmom Aug 09, 2005 09:35 PM

Caesar my Yorkie mix has been ill for the last 2 days. He is 13 yrs old. We had him to the Vets today and she said that he seemed Ok. She gave me some pills for an upset stomach and some special diet dog food. She also gave him a antibiaotic injection. But at home here he has not eaten, nor drank anything all day. He has not gone to the bathroom, nor will he get up and walk. His stomach looks swollen to me.
A month ago he had a tumor removed from inside his mouth, but seems to have recovered from that. He has always been very active, but now he does not move at all, just lays there. I know I will have him back to the Vets again tomorrow because I am worried about him.
Does anyone have the slightest idea what his problem is? What are the symptoms if an older dog has cancer?
Thank You.... oldmom

Hi,
I'm so sorry to hear about Caesar. Thirteen years is a long time to have a beloved pet and I know that you want the best for him. If the tumor that was removed was cancerous, I suppose it's possible that it has returned but you'll have to check with your vet on that. OTOH, it may not be related to that at all. I think it's good that you'll be taking him back to the vet again tomorrow. She may want to do other tests. Please let us know how things turn out.

Has your vet done xrays? Blood work? 13 is old, and it could be that his age is catching up with him.

What kind of food are you feeding?

I would definately be looking into getting a second opinon, and perhaps seeing a specalist.

If the blood work/xrays were done, did they show anything?

The other thing is that maybe his mouth is still sore from the surgery. Not to mention the psychological aspects...

I would defiantely be discussing that with the vet along with getting a second opinion.
