growth question

rachaelleigh Aug 12, 2005 03:30 PM

I have a 22 month old German Shepherd female, when she was younger she was always larger than she should be, but it seems that she hasn't grown in a long time, she is currently 65lbs. she is long and narrow, is about 25 in. tall and her chest is only 6 in. wide or so. She is from german lines, with many Sieger winners, is this about her full size? Any information would be appreciated thanks.

If she gets any more height, it probably won't be more than maybe an inch. She is quite likely to fill out. Have your veterinarian check her weight by physical examination and advise you as to whether she needs to gain and if you should increase her food. When she fills out, that alone may increase her a height that inch, because the shoulder blades shift when the dog muscles up more. She sounds like a size I would love. GSDs were not really meant to be as huge as some are these days. An extra-large dog loses some agility. A more moderate size is also a better sign in terms of hip structure.

Thanks, I'll talk to my vet. I also agree that the large GSDs are not as the breed was intended to be, thank you again.

My girl was pretty much full grown by a year or so and maybe about 65# but then her heaviest was 75# during mid life and then got thinner as she got older.

The males tend to be a bit bigger but the original breed standard really shouldn't be much more than 75#.

I know some now are being bred to be closer to 100 or more but that's not really the original GSD standard.

Just keep her on high quality foods etc. I use Flint River Ranch now, Pet Promise, Halo Spots Stew etc.
