my big tough dog doesnt like tall men... or hot air balloons

berocca Aug 14, 2005 09:08 PM

My landlord is selling the house; so there has been a constant stream of people looking through the house, which to Cody means lots of new friends (great guard dog he would make!). Today we had building inspectors around, and one of them was really tall. I had Cody on the leash and was playing catch with him so he wouldnt annoy the people, but I neednt have bothered. He wouldnt go anywhere near them! He growled from a distance, and shrunk away if the guy came near him! Eventually the guy knelt down and Cody tentatively licked his hand, but flinched at the slightest movement. It was the funniest thing I had ever seen!

Yesterday, I woke to hear Cody barking (a very rare occurence, he never gives more than a one of bark, and even that is rare). I went outside to see what the matter was but he wasnt at the door to greet me (also rare, he hears me in the kitchen and runs to the back door in case im coming out). I stood in the yard calling him and whistling but he wouldnt come over, eventually I saw his head pop round the corner of the house and he virtually crawled towards me and hid behind my legs. He seemed alright once I started patting him, but when I tried to walk out from under the patio he started barking and growling at the sky, I looked up and saw a few hot air balloons (very very far in the air mind you).

Strange dog...

been wanting to get one for Cody for a while, but at the moment he is chewing everything, and many toys have not survived this onslaught. How easy would it be for him to destroy a kong? coz they arent very cheap so i dont want to buy one for him to kill...

Codi looks young. He might just be going through a fear stage, or this is just something he hasn't been desensitized to yet. Dogs pick out some of the strangest things to be scared of sometimes. One of my dogs doesn't like people wearing sunglasses and hats at the same time. Sunglasses alone are fine. Hats alone are fine. Together- not good.

If you continue to notice this timid behavior, you might want to work on it.
